What are Macronutrients?

Updated: Jun 27, 2022

What Are Macronutrients? Macro is the abbreviation for macronutrients.

What is a macronutrient? They're the three categories of nutrients you eat the most and provide you with the most of your energy: protein, carbohydrates and fats. So, when you're counting your macros, you're counting the grams of protein, carbs and fat that you're consuming.

Why should you track macros?

Keeping track of macros can help you make smart and healthy food choices. It’s similar to counting calories but it’s one step further.

So, calories don’t matter? Sorry, but no, calories DO matter! In the simplest terms, weight loss happens when you burn more calories than you consume. Macro counting helps you understand where those calories are coming from and how they affect your body. It also helps you understand that not all calories are created equal.

Is it worth it?

Yes! Macro counting is great because it’s not a one size fits all plan. It’s commonly referred to as flexible dieting, since you're eating real foods without depriving yourself. You might have heard the saying, if it fits your macros. Does that mean you should have five cookies every day? No absolutely not. But, you can indulge in a cookie or so every so often.

Counting macros helps you:

Lose stubborn fat

Maintain lean muscle mass

Keep your body satisfied

Good for Bulking

Remember, you have to focus on the number of your macros and the nutrition. You want to consume protein, carbs and fats. You don’t want to lose track of all the important nutrients your body needs, such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You can do this by eating healthy whole foods. Staying away from processed foods.

An easy way to track macros is on an app I use called MyFitnessPal.

While you are tracking your macros and eating healthy foods that fuel your body, exercise is also an important factor for weight loss goals. Move more, eat less.
